POSTED: 4:38 pm MST February 27, 2012GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- The Montana Human Rights Commission has ordered the Great Falls School District to pay the family of an autistic boy $150,000 for emotional distress he suffered in a special education classroom. The fine is the largest emotional distress award ever handed down by the commission.Tifonie Schilling's 2009 complaint alleged that classroom aides mistreated her son by holding his head under water if he fell asleep in class and leaving him sitting in soiled pants as punishment. Her son was 13 at the time.Monday the Schilling family may appeal because the hearing officer limited the type of damages to emotional distress and also limited the time period of the injury to one week out of the two years they say he was abused.Copyright 2011 The Associated Press.
