Administrators at Wisconsin Lutheran College are trying to reach out to residents in the neighborhoods around the school as it seeks to win approval of a rezoning of houses that it owns.
But some residents are skeptical of the college's long-range plans, in spite of its assurances. Many are long-term residents with years of experience with the college that has made them wary.
At a July meeting, Plan Commission members, faced with 16 residents opposed to the rezoning, and a petition signed by 38 also in opposition, put off the college's request, and asked it to return with more detailed plans and a clearer picture of its future. The state Department of Justice has been asked to review possible charges in a weekend Milwaukee homicide because the suspect in the case is the son of a Milwaukee judge.
James Donegan, 32, is being held in the Milwaukee County jail on $250,000 bail. He was arrested Sunday night shortly after the stabbing death of Teresa Boone at Kilbourn Reservoir Park. Police credited witness cooperation for the quick arrest.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Kent Lovern said Wednesday that his office had asked the attorney general's office to handle the review of the case and make the decision on what charges, if any, to file in the homicide to avoid any appearance of bias due to Donegan's relationship to Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Thomas P. Wisconsin Rapids - A jail administrator in central Wisconsin has been suspended after the escape of an inmate.
Wood County Sheriff Thomas Reichert said the inmate was painting in a work-release section of the jail last week and escaped through a door that was open for ventilation. The inmate was located and arrested the following day in Wisconsin Rapids.
Reichert said administrator Andrew Netz exercised poor judgment in allowing the open door. WAOW-TV reported Netz was suspended 30 days without pay.
The parent organization of Ministry Health Care, which has 15 hospitals in Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota, has signed a memorandum of understanding that could lead to the health system becoming a regional ministry of Ascension Health Alliance, the country's largest Catholic health system.
Marian Health System, parent of Ministry Health Care, said the memorandum of understanding also includes Via Christi Health in Wichita, Kan., and St. John Health System in Tulsa, Okla.

AdvenioTecnoSys, a Kolkata, India, health care company, has licensed software that automatically assesses digital images of the liver from the Medical College of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The software helps assess features on liver scans, such as scarring and fat deposits, said Joseph Bockhorst, and assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science at UWM.

Green Bay -- Before training camp --- at the annual shareholders meeting --- general manager Ted Thompson made a point to say the Packers were "maturing"?and that they wouldn't be the youngest team in the league. He is correct, to an extent. The Super Bowl core from 2010 remains mostly in tact.
But after another round of cuts catered toward rookies, it's clear the Packers will be fielding a young team. On the Packers' 53-man roster, 46 players are 28 years or younger (86.8%). And nearly half of the roster -- 25 players -- are 24 years or younger.
No revelation by any means. An emphasis on youth is how Thompson rebuilt the Packers. Yet in sticking to Thompson's blueprint, the Packers do enter the 2012 season green at a handful of key positions. A Fargo, N.D., maker of DNA and protein products said Wednesday it is doubling the amount of space it has in Madison's University Research Park.
Aldevron is moving into the park's accelerator building and expanding into 7,200 square feet of space, the company said.
"The combination of favorable market trends and a talented team has allowed us to move from a temporary office to a purpose-built biotech facility in three years," said Tom Foti, vice president and general manager, in a statement. A natural gas leak was reported about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday in the 5800 block of S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Cudahy and some houses and businesses were evacuated.
A contractor doing road work struck a service line, We Energies spokesman Brian Manthey said.
The leak was stopped by 10:20 a.m. and a crew was repairing the line, Manthey said.
Viswa Subbaraman, founder and artistic director of Houston's Opera Vista, will become the Skylight Music Theatre's next artistic director, the local company announced Wednesday.
Subbaraman will take over the Skylight's artistic leadership beginning with the 2013-'14 season. He succeeds Bill Theisen, who is finishing his 9th season as the Skylight's artistic leader.

Oak Creek police are seeking the people responsible for the explosion of two bottle bombs in a residential area the evening of Aug. 28.
According to the police report:
Several residents called police after hearing what they thought were shotgun blasts, fireworks or a car backfiring in the 400 block of East Wynbrook Drive at 11:12 p.m. Aug. 28. Charlotte, N.C. -- House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was wrapping up a breakfast with journalists when a reporter told her that President Obama's acceptance address Thursday night had been moved from the outdoor Bank of America stadium to the indoor Time Warner Cable Arena due to forecasts of bad weather.
"Oh! You knew before me!" said Pelosi, speaking at a roundtable sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.
"It's rain. What can we do? The higher power," Pelosi said. "I think it would have been nice. It was wonderful when he did it before (in Denver) ... But there are some decisions that are made from a different place and whether it rains or not is not in the President's control."?

Elm Grove residents Nancy and Kraig Klapperich had no idea the danger their son, Staff Sgt. Kyle Klapperich, faced every day for the last eight years.?
Until a few weeks ago when Nancy and Kraig were invited to the Pentagon for an award ceremony, they also had no idea how many lives their son has saved. In mid-August, Kyle was awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Action Medal for bravery under fire for one of his three tours of duty in Afghanistan. He also has served one tour in Iraq.
Kyle is a seven-year veteran of the Elite Para-Rescue Jumpers division of the U.S. Air Force. He is part of the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Fla. NeuWave Medical, a Madison medical device company, said Wednesday it has raised $14 million in a second round of financing.
H.I.G. BioVentures, a new investor in the company, led the funding round, NeuWave said. Other investors include Venture Investors, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation and the State of Wisconsin Investment Board.

A college student still had a blood alcohol content too high to legally drive eight hours after he went missing from a group of friends Monday night.
Authorities launched a search for the 23-year-old because after a night downing shots of Goldschlager, tequila and whiskey along with a number of bourbon and Cokes with friends, no one could find him, according to a report in the La Crosse Tribune.

Shoppers at several Kohl?s Department Stores in Wisconsin will be able to charge electric vehicles at no cost while they shop, beginning this fall.
Kohl?s said Wednesday it will add 36 new charging stations at 18 locations this fall, its first charging stations in its home state.

A 16-year-old Milwaukee girl and a 20-year-old Milwaukee woman were arrested in a theft attempt that reportedly involved 42 pairs of underwear, clothes and accessories at the Wauwatosa Target on Aug. 29.
According to the police report:
The suspects, including one who had brought along her infant child, entered the store with two large bags and wandered around, stuffing items in them. Hillsboro - A rural Hillsboro man has been arrested for the 11th time on suspicion of drunken driving.
Police say the 51-year-old man was picked up after driving on the wrong side of a highway in Hillsboro on Monday. The driver had been out on bond from a previous drunken driving arrest in March.
WKBT-TV says he's being held in the Vernon County Jail on $10,000 bond.

One person has died in a fuel tanker crash in Wood County.
Sheriff's officials say the Kwik Trip tanker had a full load of fuel when the driver lost control on a curve in the Township of Richfield early Wednesday and rolled over in a ditch along county Highway A.
Authorities say a minimal amount of fuel was spilled. Kwik Trip is loading the fuel to another tanker. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has been notified of the spill.

A 31-year-old off-duty Milwaukee police officer was critically injured Wednesday in a crash just after midnight on I-94 when the vehicle he was driving was struck by a wrong-way driver who did not have her vehicle's headlights on, authorities said.
The officer, whose name was not released, had just gotten off work and was on his way home when he was hit by the drunken driver, the Milwaukee Police Department said.

Meijer Inc.'s combined supermarket-discount store planned for Grafton received final zoning approval Tuesday night from the Village Board.
Also, the Meijer store proposed for Franklin received zoning approval Tuesday night from the Common Council. But the council delayed acting on a separate permitting issue until its Sept. 18 meeting.

A 71-year-old driver died in a one-car crash about 5 p.m. Tuesday at N. 70th St. and W. Brown Deer Road, Milwaukee police said.
Police said the driver may have had a medical emergency right before the crash.
The driver's name has not yet been released by police.
A 31-year-old Milwaukee man was shot in the left thigh about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 3100 block of N. 12th St., Milwaukee police said.
The man was treated at a hospital.
Police said they are searching for a suspect.

Sturgeon Bay - An Illinois man is charged with killing a woman and her unborn child at a Wisconsin resort last month.
The prosecutor on Tuesday charged 35-year-old Brian Cooper with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and one count of third-degree sexual assault.

Madison - The state wants to keep nearly $20,000 in cash that was seized from four people in relation to alleged sports-betting operations.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice has filed complaints asking a judge to declare the money as contraband. State officials want the money transferred to the State School Fund.

Power has been restored to about 2,800 We Energies customers in Cudahy after a service interruption caused by a lightning strike, utility spokesman Brian Manthey said late Tuesday.
In addition to the Cudahy power losses, severe thunderstorms and high winds knocked out electricity to about 3,000 We Energies customers in Jefferson County, and scattered outages were reported throughout southeastern Wisconsin, Manthey said.

The per-pupil funding that Wisconsin has budgeted for local school districts heading into the 2012-'13 school year is slightly higher than per-pupil funding budgeted for last school year, but still far below the amount the state was sending to school districts before the start of the recession in 2008, according to a new report released Tuesday.
The report analyzes state budget documents for 48 states and projects per-student spending in Wisconsin this school year to be down $911 from the 2007-'08 school year, the fourth-largest decline in spending per student over that period for all the states studied.
But per-student spending by Wisconsin is projected to increase by about $3 per student this year, the second year of Gov. Scott Walker's biennial state budget, according to the report from the Center on Budget Policy and Priorities, a nonprofit Washington, D.C., think tank that describes itself as "fiscally conservative and socially liberal." ?Read Full Article

A 21-year-old man too drunk to drive home shot a friend who allowed him to spend the night and then fatally shot himself, according to a report released Tuesday by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office.
Michael D. Cowart might have been trying to tell the friend and the friend's girlfriend that someone was trying to break into the home in the 2600 block of N. Fratney St. when he awakened them shortly after 4 a.m. Monday, according to the medical examiner's report.

Federal rail officials have shown no signs of yielding. But Gov. Scott Walker's administration might be gambling on the possibility that fellow Republican Mitt Romney could be in the White House by the time the issue is decided.
The state Department of Transportation has been under federal pressure for several years to rebuild the rail concourse at the state-owned Amtrak-Greyhound station to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The leader of a Hindu sect in Milwaukee who was convicted of bringing sham priests to the United States under a religious worker visa program will be sitting behind bars as he awaits sentencing.
Sagarsen Haldar was ordered detained last week by U.S. District Judge Rudolph Randa, who cited the risk that Haldar might flee to his native India before his sentencing in October. Haldar faces up to five years in prison.
Haldar, 32, was convicted by a jury in November of conspiracy to defraud the government. The prosecutor showed that over two years Haldar filed 25 applications with the State Department to bring people from India to work at his temple in Milwaukee. They were not religious workers, however, but more like indentured servants who were charged up to $30,000 by Haldar to arrange their entry, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Haanstad. ?Read Full Article
A 39-year-old man was arrested Tuesday morning after he and another man attacked three people waiting in line to enter the Milwaukee County Courthouse, the sheriff's office reported.
Two of the victims were beaten bad enough to require transport to a hospital, authorities said.

A man convicted of taking part in the fatal robbery of a west side resident known for helping people in need was sentenced Tuesday to four years in prison.
Darryl Goates-Sanders, 25, pleaded guilty last month to an amended charge of homicide by dangerous weapon. He was originally charged with felony murder. He was also ordered to serve another four years of extended supervision after his release, and credited for almost 2? years he's been in jail since his arrest for the 2010 crime.
According to a criminal complaint, Thomas Arthur Viljevac Sr. allowed Cassandra L. Moore, 28, and her two children to stay at his home rent-free. Moore then told Robert Devell Edwards that Viljevac, 59, kept money at the home in the 200 block of N. 30th St. ?Read Full Article
Madison - Groups that blocked the state's new voter ID law in two lawsuits this spring are fighting an effort to have the state Supreme Court take over the cases and render a ruling before the presidential election.
Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen last month asked the high court to take the cases from two appeals courts, consolidate them and rule before the Nov. 6 election.
The Supreme Court this spring rejected an earlier effort by Van Hollen to take over the cases. Van Hollen argues it is appropriate to take the cases now that both cases have complete trial records. ?Read Full Article
Greenfield - At the Greenfield School District annual meeting, residents will review a proposed $45.5 million budget for the 2012-13 school year that calls for a nearly flat property tax levy.
The annual meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Greenfield High School Performing Arts Center, 4800 S. 60th St.
At $25 million, the proposed levy is 0.26 percent or $63,737 higher than the levy for last year. It would support a proposed budget of $45.5 million, of which $35.68 million would be for the general fund - basically the operating budget. Milwaukee police Officer Erin K. Lelinski has been suspended for 30 days for driving drunk and becoming involved in a crash while off duty, according to the Fire and Police Commission.
The crash occurred around 9:20 p.m. June 7 outside Lucky's Irish Pub, 789 W. Layton Ave., according to a complaint Chief Edward Flynn filed with the commission. The complaint does not indicate whether another vehicle was involved in the crash or whether anyone was injured. Lelinski's blood-alcohol level was 0.21, more than twice the legal limit for driving in Wisconsin, the complaint says.
Lelinski was hired as a police officer in 2000. Her previous disciplinary record includes only an official reprimand for missing court, according to her personnel record. ?Read Full Article
Madison -- Groups that blocked the state?s new voter ID law in two separate lawsuits are fighting an effort to have the state Supreme Court take over the cases and render a ruling before the Nov. 6 election.
Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen last month asked?the high court to take the cases from two appeals courts, consolidate them and rule before the election.
The Supreme Court this spring rejected an earlier effort by Van Hollen to take over the cases. Van Hollen argues it is appropriate to take the cases now that they both have full trial records. ?Read Full Blog Post
