HONG KONG (Reuters) - An economic slowdown in China is taking a toll on a growing number of companies, with a series of profit warnings highlighting how weakness in the world's second-largest economy is hitting earnings and rattling investors across the board.
Shareholders of GOME Electrical , China's No.2 home appliance retailer, said at the company's annual general meeting on Thursday that they were concerned about the impact of a China slowdown on the company's sales.
"The management admitted that sales have been affected by a slowdown in economic growth, but they didn't clearly say if a recovery will come or things will be steady for the rest of the year," said Calvin Tan, a director of investment at Ma & Wong Asset Management.
GOME's shares, which have plunged 44 percent so far this year, closed down nearly 4 percent at HK$0.98 on Thursday, their lowest level since October 2008, lagging a 0.8 percent drop in the benchmark Hang Seng Index <.hsi>.
"It is too late for us to sell the shares and we don't know how long we have to keep the stock," said a GOME shareholder who left in the middle of the meeting and declined to be named.
The concerns over GOME come after shares of China Resources Cement Holdings closed down 5.5 percent on Thursday after it warned of a sharp fall in first-half earnings as selling prices for cement products have fallen.
China's central bank cut its policy rates in June for the first time since the global financial crisis as data for April and May suggested growth was weakening more than previously thought.
Many economists have cut their forecasts since May and say second-quarter growth could be just over 7 percent, which would be the weakest pace of expansion since the global economic crisis.
A Reuters poll in May showed a consensus forecast for full-year growth in 2012 of 8.2 percent, which would be the slowest pace of growth since 1999.
"The worst is yet to come," said Paul Tang, chief economist at the Bank of East Asia . "The impact could be reflected in the third quarter before some sign of improvement. That is why there is an urgent need for the Chinese government to launch some supportive measures."
RETAIL SALES SLIDE
A clampdown on China's property sector by policymakers has weighed on GOME and its bigger rival, Suning , seen by some as China's answer to Best Buy
"Sales simply fell miserably this year, at least 30 percent down from last year, in terms of refrigerators and laundry machines," said a sales assistant at a GOME store in China who would only give her surname Zhang as she was not authorized to speak to the media.
Indeed, home appliance sales rose just 0.5 percent in May from a year earlier, underperforming a 13.8 percent increase in overall retail sales, government data shows.
"It's also related to the slowdown in new apartment purchases, because as soon as you buy an apartment, you need to buy a new refrigerator, washing machine and such," said Bruno Lannes, Shanghai-based head of Bain & Company's retail and consumer products practice for Greater China.
China's property investment grew 18.5 percent in the first five months from a year earlier, down from an annual rise of 27.9 percent for the full year of 2011 and 33.2 percent in 2010.
Some Suning staff shrugged off concerns of a slowdown.
"The tightening policy only has minimal impact on our sales. Even though a household is restricted to one or two homes, the total transactions are still huge and people's demand for home appliances is strong," said Xiao Yuanfu, a sales manager at Suning who joined the company in 2004.
High-end products have also come under pressure.
Zhang Yuping, executive chairman of Hengdeli Holdings Ltd , China's top luxury watch retailer, told Reuters earlier this month that an uncertain economic environment had slowed sales growth of luxury watches on the mainland this year.
"On the industry front, a trend of slower demand for high-end products is expected this year, with sales of Cartier and Rolex already seen slowing," Zhang said.
Caterpillar Inc
Caterpillar rival Sany Heavy Industry said on Thursday it might delay its planned Hong Kong initial public offering of shares if market conditions remained weak. It filed for a $2 billion listing, Thomson Reuters publication IFR reported in May.
Sany's group president was, however, optimistic for the company's sales in the second half.
"The second half of this year will be better than the second half of last year," said Sany's president, Tang Xiuguo, adding this was because he did not expect further tightening policies.

You?re probably aware that GenY is mired in debt, lacks employment, and is excessively educated. Despite those depressing facts,?GenY?s spending on luxury goods grew more than any other generational cohort.
Reading this, I felt a twinge of shame. As you may know, I?m vintage ?87.
I?m starting to feel like GenY?s failure is a foregone conclusion. And it?s?for the most pathetic reasons of all: laziness, apathy, and straight-up hedonism.
A lot of smart writers like Rob Carrick have sympathy for our generation. It?s kind of them. We do face legitimate problems, but that only merits a certain amount of leeway.
Our grandparents had some problems, too. They beat Hitler and put men on the moon.
What have we, the Echo Boomers,?done? After 9/11, everybody my age started hating George W. Bush. Then they all got baked and just kinda rode longboards. Hipsters emerged. We?re post-modernism?s cruel parody of the Greatest Generation.
To my fellow Gen-Yers, and specifically the Pop?n'Chips set: seriously, suck it up. I am sick of you. Your failure is not for lack of good advice (except about the housing bubble ? I?ll give you?a pass if you foolishly bought a condo in Toronto).

Step 1: Don?t Get a?Useless Degree
If you get a B.A. in Anthropological Post-Modern Women?s Cultural Studies, you are the author of two things:
You need to be the solution to your own problem by getting a credential that?s in demand. You don?t need to be an economist to choose the correct credential.
If you get a Latin degree, I wish you all the best. Maybe you?ll become a successful lawyer. Most likely, you won?t. Sorry for chuckling when I see you at an Occupy Wall Street rally.
For the Kids
If you?re a 17- or 18-year old kid who is about to graduate highschool, here?s all you need to learn from this article:
- Get a useful credential. This could be a trade certificate. No, not Early Childhood Education or kitchen chef. I?m talking about getting your electrician or pipefitting papers. Alternately, you could get a degree ? but make sure it?s in Engineering or an applied science.
- Go to the oil patch.
Step 2: Get a Job
Proper alignment of labour supply and demand is essential to a healthy economy. The truth: there is demand for labour?in Canada. The problem for GenY grads? The demand?isn?t in Ontario (nor is it demand for hair stylists).
If you?ve followed Step One (Don?t Get a Useless Degree), and you?re willing to move, you?ll get a job. On the other hand, if you can?t handle doing TWO things right, then you?re lazy or selfish or both.
For the Unemployed B.Ed.s
If I hear one more B.Ed. living in Southern Ontario moan about how they can?t find work, I?m going to lose it. Teaching is a great job ? it pays extremely well and only takes an extra year of school (if you?ve already got a BA in Philosophy). That makes it?very attractive to a large subset of graduates ? the ones who have no prospects in the labour market and who can?t create their own jobs. As a result, no, you will not find a job in your hometown. At best, you?ll run on the supply teaching treadmill for years. What?s the solution?
Move. Way up north. Northern Ontario, perhaps. Nunavut, even. Wherever there?s a job. There are a TON of jobs for teachers, but not in Oshawa (if you think that?s far north or the middle of nowhere, you?re an insufferable Torontonian). Northern jobs pay well. They must pay well, or else they wouldn?t attract enough workers (Canada?s north is a harsh environment).
Oh, you?re not actually up for a challenge, huh?? You just like saying it on your resume??Well, you should probably stop lying to people about how you like to ?challenge? yourself when really you just like mountain biking.?You want to stay in Guelph with the BF and BFFs? Don?t be hating when I laugh at your story on ?Til Debt Do Us Part.
A?job isn?t for fulfillment. It?s for money. Otherwise most of us would be volunteering for a foodbank or travelling Europe all the time. Oh right, Gen Y does the latter constantly. You live in an absolutely magical time and place ? an abundance of material wealth, lots of free time to pursue your passions, and incredible technology. Even still, menial jobs and hard work are below you, GenY. No wonder you?re unemployed.
Do you think your?Great Grandparents toiled on farms to find themselves? Do you think your Grandpas slung metal in a factory for fulfillment?
If this truth is some kind of sacrilege to your Theory Y-enlightened PC sensibilities, then it proves one thing: guidance counsellors have successfully rendered impotent our entire generation. Your ?Employment Development Officer? isn?t working for ?recognition? and ?satisfaction?. He or she works for money. Think about it.
Step 3: Don?t Spend Like an Idiot
This one?s self-explanatory. The Baby Boomers had it easy on Steps #1 and #2, so they succeeded. But, unlike their parents, the Boomers ? as a whole ? flunked on #3. There?s a reason that most of their net worth is tied up in houses and they haven?t generated appreciable assets: they spent too damn much money. They may have a workplace pension so they won?t have to eat catfood. You, on the other hand, probably won?t enjoy Defined Benefit golden handcuffs.
The answer is simple: save money. Below are six rules. They don?t explain how to save money in every specific situation. That would take a book (are there any publishers out there who want to take a chance on ?How to Not Be Money-Stupid? by Joe Wood??). In lieu of the book, here are the rules:
Rule #1: spend less than you make.
Rule #2: pay yourself first.
Rule #3: maximize the surplus of your revenue over expenses.
?Rule #3 (a): Structure your life intelligently to avoid high fixed costs.
?Rule #3 (b): budget carefully to avoid high variable costs.
Rule #4: maintain a modest lifestyle (even a student poverty-esque lifestyle, if necessary).
Rule #5: pay with cash or have the cash to pay it off.
Rule #6: maximize your tax-advantaged accounts every year. It never gets easier, only harder, so start now.
Conspicuous consumption is cool today. Your iPhone will be pretty lame when you?re in debt at age 50.
And that?s the 3-Step program. You didn?t even need to buy my book.

Have you seen the commercials (below) where individuals are walking around town with ?Their Number? (tucked under their arm)?? The numbers are intended to be financial security and ranged from $1.0M ? $2.0M.? The basic meaning of the commercial is once you achieve ?Your Number? you are good to go because you are financially secure.
I think this commercial is extremely effective at getting individuals to think about their finances. However, I believe it is logically flawed in many ways, and it annoys me that people fall for this hocus-pocus financial planning.
My first issue is with the basic premise of the commercial, which focuses on ?Net Worth?.? Your goal as a buy and hold real estate investor is not some ?Magic Net Worth Calculation?.? In fact, as a buy-and-hold investor, I believe the net worth calculation is worthless except at cocktail parties or while bragging to friends and family.
If you are a buy-and-hold real estate investor, you need to ignore net worth calculations and simply focus on monthly cash flow.? Note: I am not talking about spreadsheet cash flow, but real cash flow with which you can pay bills, take expensive trips, and buy toys if you choose to.? In other words, spreadsheet cash flow doesn?t count; it has to be real money produced in the real world.
Summary: Focus on Cash Flow NOT Net Worth
My next issue with this commercial is the concept that you need north of a million dollars.? Most people see a million dollars and think, ?wow, that would be so cool,? or, ?maybe if I had a million dollars I would be set.?? Unfortunately, the next thought tends to be, ?I will never get there and thus I will live for today and not plan for the future.?
Instead of targeting a goal that seems so far out of reach, real estate investors would be much better off focusing on calculating their monthly spending to maintain or exceed their current standard of living.? Depending on the person, this could be anywhere from $2K to $20K a month.
Your number is your number and there are no wrong answers.
Ask yourself, ?Is it easier to think about $1,000,000 or $5,000??? I suspect that if most people sat down and really looked at the minimum number of monthly cash flow required to maintain their lifestyles, they would be shocked. The number you calculate may either exceed or fail to meet your expectations, but one way or another you will be shocked, and I propose that knowing is better than not knowing.
I suggest you sit down somewhere quiet and really think about the minimum number you need from cash flow real estate (or other investments) to survive month-to-month without working for someone else.? Remember, if you rely on real estate income/ cash flow rather than a steady job, your expenses will drop in some areas and you will spend money in other areas.
If you are in a relationship, I suggest you share this exercise with your significant other to ensure you are working together and agree on the math behind the minimum number.
Once you have the minimum number, you are good to go. It is up to you where you want to take this number.? For example, if you take your minimum number and multiply by two or three, your life will be pretty sweet.
Summary: Think about Monthly Cash Flow Needs and Not a $1,000,000-$2,000,000 as it is easier to focus on and achieve.
My final issue with the commercial goes back to the unstated subtext, which went something like this: ?Give us your money and we will take care of you.? Seriously, that is what they want you to do. In retrospect, this actually might be good advice for the average investor, but I don?t like being average.
I suggest focusing on activities that you can control and that you can decide are good ideas, instead of hoping some third party you have never met, has your back.
Both active and passive real estate investing takes work and it is your job to learn the market, establish relationships, and ensure you are producing monthly cash flow off which to live.
In closing, I want to ask each of you one question:
What is the monthly minimum number you need your cash flow real estate to produce in order to live financially free?

Workshop to focus on post service
The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) will host the second regional Universal Postal Union (UPU) workshop.
Participants at the workshop will focus on ways to ensure sustainable development in the postal sector, including discussions on the environment, economy and society. Workshop leaders will also conduct an action plan on sustainable development with 20 goals.
According to VietnamPost this workshop will be attended by delegates from 20 countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific and representatives of the French Republic and local ministries and agencies as well as some foreign organisations in Viet Nam.
Main cities steady in outsource ranking
HCM City and Ha Noi have held their rankings among the top 100 IT outsourcing cities of the world last year, says international market researcher Tholons.
HCM City slipped one position from 2010 while Ha Noi kept its place, Tholons said.
In 2009 the two cities dropped from fifth to tenth, losing their worldwide edge.
Tholons forecasts, however, that Viet Nam would emerge as one of the major providers of information technology services outsourcing in Southeast Asia, and could replace China and India.
The global adviser said despite experiencing a stagnant growth rate, HCM City had a chance to boost its attractiveness of software outsourcing.
According to the Viet Nam Software Association, HCM City and Ha Noi accounted for 90 per cent of the country?s software outsourcing revenue in the last several years.
Low labour costs, improved business environment and a skilled workforce were the main factors attracting leading technology firms such as Intel, IBM and Siemens to set up distribution centres in Viet Nam, the association said.
The salary for Business Processing Outsourcing personnel in Viet Nam was about 75 per cent lower than Chinese major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Dalien.
Meanwhile, thanks to a long period of French rule, Viet Nam had an advantage in the French language, which could attract French firms such as ESI, Mega International, Sysun and Worketer. Some have already visited HCM City and Ha Noi to find business opportunities.
Tholons said India was the top outsourcing nation with six cities among the top 10. They were Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune.
Mobile-phone expo, conference on track
A mobile phone exhibition and conference to be held in Ha Noi in October was expected to attract 500,000 visitors and more than 100 media organisations, organisers said yesterday.
Mobile Viet Nam 2012 was predicted to be the largest and most influential gathering in the rapidly growing Vietnamese mobile industry to date.
With a growth rate of 19.2 per cent this year, experts predicted Viet Nam?s total IT market would top US$3.25 billion, which would make it among the top IT spenders in the Asia/Pacific this year.
Smartphone shipments made up 9 per cent of the mobile market in the second quarter last year. This amounted to over 400,000 units. The global market intelligence firm IDC estimated this year the tablet market in Viet Nam would grow 92 per cent year-on-year.
Mobile Viet Nam 2012 will be organised by the Centre for Press and International Communication Co-operation of the Ministry of Information and Communications; the Viet Nam Exhibition Conference and Advertisement Joint Stock Company, and Number One Media Technology Corporation.
The exhibition and conference will be held at the International Exhibition Centre on Tran Hung Dao Street from October 18-20.
It is being sponsored by the Ministries of Industry and Trade, Science and Technology, and Planning and Investment; the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce; the Media and Information Technology Industry and the Viet Nam Advertising Association.

The 2012 Viet Nam Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) Summit will be held in Ha Noi on June 26 and 27.

This year?s summit will also focus on applying ICT to deal with hot issues such as traffic jams and accidents, educational reform, development of smart cities and electronic ID cards.

Ha Noi hosts information technology summit
The 2012 Viet Nam Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) Summit will be held in Ha Noi on June 26 and 27.
With the theme ?ICT, National Core Infrastructure,? the summit will promote modernisation of the nation?s infrastructure by applying information technology (IT).
This year?s summit will also focus on applying ICT to deal with hot issues such as traffic jams and accidents, educational reform, development of smart cities and electronic ID cards.

So the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the AT&T Galaxy S II kinda went live. Then it kinda didn't. And we've seen that happen wtih so many Samsung updates that we've kinda grown numb to it. But that doesn't mean we don't care. Here's the official word from AT&T corporate PR, which is a step or five over customer service chats.
We plan for the upgrade to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for Galaxy S II customers to be live very soon. Like with every OS update, we test it on our servers before we roll it out to customers. We’re in the process of doing that with Android 4.0 (ICS) for Galaxy S II customers and hope to make that live soon. We recommend customers wait to attempt the update.
So that's why you saw it, and now you don't. AT&T tells us it'll have more info at its consumer blog here once the update goes live. Hang in there, folks.

Even though she's married to a Brit and has homes in the Hamptons, New York City and London, the Best Coast has drawn Gwyneth Paltrow to Los Angeles.
The Oscar-winning actress, cookbook author, and web entrepreneur -- who recently starred in "The Avengers" and will appear in "Iron Man 3" -- is known for being a East Coast girl. As she was mostly raised in New York (she even has an iPad app about the city), and is an avid fan of the English lifestyle, it's surprising that Paltrow would choose to spend close to $10.45 million on a pad in LA. Yet our city has much to boast about, and even the actress clearly recognizes that.
Paltrow's new mansion still references her East Coast roots, though, with a chic New England style. The 8,000 square-foot Mandeville Canyon home was built as a concept house by designer Windsor Smith, and includes rooms designed by the likes of Candace Barnes, Peter Dunham and Kathryn Ireland, according to Zillow. The house was even featured by Veranda Magazine after it was completed last year.
The palatial residence has more than enough room for Paltrow, her husband Chris Martin, and their two children, Apple and Moses, with six bedrooms, eight bathrooms and a stunning marble kitchen. The home is decorated with crisp, clean shades of white that echo the d?cor of the star's Tribeca apartment and Hamptons compound. Now, that all sounds lovely, but we're pretty sure that with three other houses, it was the charm of LA itself that motivated Paltrow to buy.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Their positions are clear.
President Barack Obama ardently defends his federal health care overhaul. Republican challenger Mitt Romney adamantly opposes it. But this coming week, when the Supreme Court rules on the constitutionality of the law, both sides will be scrambling for political gain no matter the outcome.
If the court upholds the law, Obama will get vindication for his signature legislative accomplishment. Romney will have a concrete target for his pledge to repeal it.
If the court rules against part or all of the law, Obama could blame Romney, congressional Republicans and a conservative-leaning court for denying health benefits to millions of people in the United States. Romney could claim victory for his assertion that the government overreached.
Striking down all or part of the law less than five months from Nov. 6 election also could mean much political uncertainty for both campaigns. That could force them to reshape long-held strategies and try to satisfy voter demands for Washington to start anew on fixing a broken health care system.
Just one-third of those questioned back the law, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll this month. But there is overwhelming backing among both supporters and opponents for Congress and the president to find a new remedy if the high court strikes down the 2-year-old law.
Obama, in campaign appearances, promotes the law's more popular elements, such as a provision allowing children to stay on their parents' insurance up to age 26. The administration has also pumped out a steady stream of positive news, including a report this past week that nearly 13 million people would receive health insurance rebates averaging $151 per household.
Romney has emphasized his repeal pledge, a central pillar of his agenda that so far offers voters few other specifics. He released a television ad Friday stressing that the elimination of the health care law will be the top priority in his administration's first 100 days.
"Day One, President Romney moves to repeal Obamacare and attacks the deficit," the narrator says in the ad set to run in Virginia, North Carolina and Iowa.
Obama aides have refused to discuss contingency plans to avoid creating the impression that they are preparing for the court to rule against them.
"We do believe it's constitutional," senior adviser David Plouffe said. "We obviously will be prepared for whatever decision the court renders."
If the court rules in its favor, the administration would press forward with full implementation of the law and use the decision to ward off Republican criticism of the overhaul. The court could strike down the full law or just the most disputed element, that most individuals carry health insurance.
In either case, the president and his aides would try to portray the repeal as detrimental to the well-being of millions of people by highlighting popular aspects of the overhaul that would disappear, including guaranteed coverage for people with existing medical conditions.
In the event of a partial repeal, the administration would move ahead with those parts of the law that do survive and could still put coverage within reach of millions of uninsured people, lay new obligations on insurers and employers, and improve Medicare benefits.
Democrats could try to raise the Supreme Court itself as an election-year issue, casting the court's decision as politically motivated.
Top aides at Romney's Boston headquarters have been working through their potential responses for several weeks. The campaign has sent health care advisers to Capitol Hill in recent days to discuss strategy with Republican lawmakers.
Republicans see political benefits for Romney even if the court sides with the Obama administration.
His repeal refrain could become increasingly attractive to the opponents of the overhaul, and his campaign could make the case that a Romney victory is the next best chance to dismantle a law that's deeply unpopular with millions of people.
That's despite Romney's own support for the "individual mandate" in Massachusetts, where as governor he signed into law a state-based measure that ultimately helped serve as a model for the president's.
Romney struggled at times during the GOP primary campaign to reconcile his past support for the mandate and current pledge to repeal the federal measure. Obama's campaign has yet to capitalize with a general election audience on that apparent contradiction.
Romney may face big challenges even if the court strikes down all or part of the law. Attention would turn quickly to what he would do to help 50 million uninsured people get coverage and bring down the nation's spiraling health care costs.
He has promised to replace the measure with a handful of "common-sense" reforms, but has spent little time so far crafting a comprehensive plan.
"Whether all or part of Obamacare will have to be repealed, that's the first step, and that's the immediate priority," said Romney's domestic policy director, Oren Cass. "His goal will be to repeal anything that's left of Obamacare and actually sit down and identify the challenges we want to address and address them."
The Obama campaign would seize on Romney's opposition to the most popular provisions in the law. For example, Romney would not prevent health care companies from denying coverage to new customers with medical conditions. Nor would he force them to cover young adults on their parents' plans through age 26.
The candidates aren't the only ones working on their responses ahead of the court's ruling.
In a memo to fellow Republicans this past week, House Speaker John Boehner warned against "spiking of the ball" if the court strikes down the law.
GOP lawmakers say they quickly would mobilize repeal votes in the House if the court upholds at least some of the law. Similar congressional repeal attempts have been blocked by the Democratic-controlled Senate, and this renewed effort probably would end up the same way.
A congressional Republican aide said GOP lawmakers would try to replace the law, though those efforts would be slower and may not happen this year. The party's focus would be on controlling costs, not on ensuring coverage for all people, said the aide, who was not authorized to discuss the issue publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

BOSTON (AP) ? Chemical and specialty products maker Cabot Corp. is buying Norit NV for $1.1 billion in order to strengthen its specialty chemicals portfolio.
Norit, which is based in the Netherlands, specializes in activated carbon products, which are used in environmental protection, air and water purification, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals and catalysts. It has 10 manufacturing plants located throughout Europe and the Americas and 760 employees.
Boston-based Cabot is buying Norit from affiliates of Doughty Hanson & Co. Managers Ltd. and Euroland Investments BV.
"This acquisition supports the ongoing transformation of our portfolio to a higher margin, less cyclical, specialty chemicals focused company," Cabot President and CEO Patrick Prevost said in a statement.
Norit will continue to be led by CEO Ronald Thompson.
The acquisition is expected to add 20 cents to 25 cents per share to fiscal 2013 earnings and 30 cents to 40 cents per share in fiscal 2014. The estimates exclude one-time costs.
The deal is expected to close this year. It requires the approval of U.S. and German regulators and consultation with the Dutch labor council.
Cabot said Thursday that it expects to fund the deal with about $200 million in cash and $300 million of borrowings under a credit agreement. It also plans to issue about $600 million of long-term debt.
Cabot shares closed at $37.97 on Wednesday. They have traded in a 52-week range of $22.45 to $44.97.
