National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

This is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and if you are 50 year old or older or if you have a history of prostate cancer in your family doctors say you need prostate cancer test. Jim Miller of Yakima says it could save your life. Miller is a prostate cancer survivor who tells KIT News, he was lucky because he found his cancer early because he saw his doctor at the right time.

Console gaming 1 PC gaming 0 ? VG247 Forum

Except when it doesn't, G1GA. If a game is broken on a console, it carries a prohibitive cost for the developer to fix their fuck-up. Some might not want to pay, and others are gonna drag out iterating on those patches, to save that money. Skyward Sword found itself in a bit of trouble, MW2 had exploits that weren't in the PC version, and New Vegas would randomly corrupt saves on consoles.

The main reason why there's so little difference between gaming on a PC and gaming on a console, is that any multi-platform title needs to be able to squeeze itself onto a console. That means less demanding games, reducing the design to work with a pad, and you won't have trouble finding PC gamers who are disappointed with that.

The difference is really as clear as comparing Crysis with Crysis 2. You have dumber AI, you have simpler graphics, and obviously that puts the PC at a disadvantage, for being capable of a lot more than that.

Strategy games, simulators, most things that deal with complex systems and micro-management are next to impossible to pull off on consoles, to say nothing for scale. I don't see Planetside 2 bringing it's 1000 v 1000 player battles to the consoles any time soon.

It's what you said, you get what you pay for. I pay more, and I get more.

On a PC I can get any game I want, digitally, often hassle free, using exactly four clicks of a mouse. On the 360 I have to count on luck to make sure Microsoft are actually offering that game I want, digitally.

A PC is never just a gaming machine.

I can watch my favourite shows while I play a nice relaxing indie game, or have a conversation while I do it, or possibly all three at the same time, if I want to give myself a multi-tasking headache.

I can listen to music on any number of services while I work on a document or write an e-mail, I can check the news, I can research anything that I might need, I can waste time on Facebook or tweet or look at Reddit, all within seconds.

A console doesn't even come close to that functionality.

Is there a gene for motherhood?

    ABC News' Juju Chang reports:

Rory Dalven is a 3-year-old girl who has not been out of diapers that long, but she already knows something about changing them.

Her sister, Saorise, is a 5-year-old kindergarten student who already knows what she wants to be when she grows up, a mom.

Their inclinations to nurture and feed baby dolls and play with items like strollers at such a young age could be something they were born with, and something that will definitely affect their futures, researchers at Rockefeller University in NYC say.

In a study with mice, the researchers determined that a single gene exists that could be responsible for motivating mothers to protect, feed and raise their young.

The study's findings mean there could be a valid explanation for why some women seem born to be maternal figures, while others come across as detached or cold or even completely not interested when it comes to children.

Some are calling the discovery the "mommy gene."

Moms who spoke with ABC News were divided on the possible link to motherhood, with some saying it makes sense and others saying it is not that simple.

"I can always remember playing with dolls and always thinking, 'I'm going to be a mom,'" one New York City mother said. "I do have friends who say they just don't have it in them to want a baby or to take care of them."

"On a good day, I'm incredibly nurturing," another mother said, raising the argument that maternal instinct might have more to do with circumstance than genetics. "On a bad day, it's a little harder."

One blogger who leads a parenting website worried that the gene study might present mothers with another reason to look harshly on themselves, and other moms.

"I worry that it could almost invite us to look at someone that does something differently than we do and say, 'She doesn't want to breast-feed. She doesn't have the 'mommy gene,"" said Melissa Lawrence, co-founder of CloudMom.com.

Do you think a "mommy gene" exists? Tell us what you think by weighing in below in the comments section.

Estate preservation hearing on Pratt site | Richard Stein - Realtor ...

    by BILL BLEYER
Site plan for Glen Cove Mansion, which is

Since J.P. Morgan Jr.?s mansion was demolished to make way for a housing development in 1980, Glen Cove officials and preservationists have worried about losing more of the city?s Gold Coast palatial homes.

The city?s solution was a new zoning classification approved two years ago. The category would allow subdivision of former estates so homes could be built on some of the property while the mansion and surrounding land would be preserved.

Thursday night at 8 at City Hall, the City Council and Planning Board will hold a joint hearing on the first application submitted under the new estate preservation zoning.

The owners of Glen Cove Mansion Hotel and Conference Center, the former John and Ruth Pratt estate, are seeking to subdivide the 54.5-acre property to split off 17.5 acres in the northeast corner to build 46 single-family homes that would each share a wall with another home, making 23 buildings. The 1910 Pratt mansion would be preserved with no further construction allowed.

The entire property, owned by Montclair Hotels, is now zoned for homes on 1-acre lots. Without the rezoning, the mansion could be demolished and replaced by about 50 single-family homes, said Judy White, in charge of community outreach for Montclair Hotels.

?The goal is to save the mansion so that we don?t lose it as another magnificent landmark on the North Shore,? White said. The rezoning would allow the owners to preserve the house while getting more value from the property, she added.

Mayor Ralph Suozzi said that was the point of creating the new zoning category as part of updating the city?s master plan. The city wanted to make sure Glen Cove Mansion, four other surviving Pratt family mansions and other Gold Coast structures would not be demolished to maximize the value of the former estates.

White said only a garage, which would be demolished, and brush occupy the 17.5 acres. Developers would try to incorporate some mature trees along the edges of the property into the layout, White added.

Montclair Hotels would choose a developer to build the houses.

If the city approves the plan, she said it would take at least two years to construct the houses, which are expected to sell for $950,000 and more. ?We don?t expect that there would be many schoolchildren,? she said.

The home buyers will not have access to facilities at the mansion, and there will be a separate entrance to their homes from Lattingtown Road. The great lawn and the view of the mansion from Dosoris Lane would not be affected by the construction, White said.

The homes would go up behind the mansion and would not be visible from Dosoris Lane or Lattingtown Road because of the sloping terrain and landscaping, she said.

?Rather than leaving it up to chance,? Suozzi said, ?we?re trying to steer it to a conclusion that retains the history of the town and respects the property, and also respects the rights of the landowner.?

    Pratt mansion?s history

Here is the history of Glen Cove?s John and Ruth Pratt mansion:

In 1910, John T. Pratt ? son of Standard Oil industrialist Charles Pratt, who founded Pratt Institute in Brooklyn ? and his wife Ruth, the first woman to represent New York State in Congress, built a mansion known as The Manor on a 54.5-acre estate at 200 Dosoris Lane.

After the deaths of Pratt in 1927 and his wife in 1965, the brick Georgian mansion became one of the first conference center hotels in the United States in 1967.

Known then as Harrison House, the mansion was also the setting for films including ?North by Northwest? and ?Sabrina.?

In 1985, the property became the 25,000-square-foot Glen Cove Mansion Hotel and Conference Center with 187 guest rooms and suites and a 5-mile walking trail.

On Thursday at City Hall, there will be a joint public hearing of the city council and planning board on an application to subdivide the property to split off 17.5 acres in the northeast corner to build 46 single-family homes that would each share a wall with another home, making 23 buildings. The mansion would be preserved and no further construction would be allowed.

Recreation and sports: Manual For Bicycle Shoppers ? Ariel ...

Posted by keflom on September 26, 2012

Purchasing a ?bicycle can ?look like an ?effortless enough ?job without any ?drawbacks or ?long term glitches. As ?straightforward a ?method as it may seem to be, buying a ?bicycle is more involving than ?just simply ?heading to hardware or ?bicycle ?stores and ?picking the one you want, ?based on color, ?measurements or design. This ?write-up will ?seek to ?provide a novice ?biker?s guide to prospective bike ?purchasers and point out ?important ?factors to ?think of before ?getting one.

Bicycles ?are available in different ?forms, ?styles and ?dimensions and are ?geared up for a variety of ?operations. There are ?various ?kinds of ?bicycle to ?pick from and some of the ?elements to ?think about before ?arriving at a final ?selection on which one to ?purchase include where you will ?use your ?bike, what you will ?utilize the ?bike for, how ?frequent you will ride it and whether you have any ?physical health ?problems, amongst others. These are but a ?handful of pointers to ?take into account. These and ?a lot more ?factors to consider will guide you into what ?kind of ?bicycle to buy. It is ?essential to answer all these ?queries before ?getting your bicycle, as these will ?enlighten your ?judgment on which ?sort of bicycle to ?buy .

?Various ?kinds of ?bikes serve different ?features and ?have different ?functions. The cargo bicycles come ?geared up with a cargo carrier and are more balanced to ?allow you to ?hold cargo as you cycle. The ?mtb or BMX bikes as they are popularly known are more suitable for mountaineering and hiking ? they also come in handy for uneven off ?route ?surfaces or for bad ?routes. Their ?style and make can take harsh and ?jagged terrain. ?Convenience ?bikes are ?excellent for your everyday and ?normal cycling either for ?health and fitness or for going to work purposes. They come handy for that ?swift cycling to the ?stores ?to buy ?breadstuff or for an early ?daytime ?physical fitness ?biking exercise. Do your own research if possible, shop around and find out more, before ?purchasing, to avoid future disappointment and ?owning a ?bike that does not ?serve for your ?demands and ?passions . ?One more ?aspect to consider is the ?rate of the ?bicycle you ?desire to ?get. If it costs an arm and a leg, it does not ?always ?imply that it is the best on the ?industry. If the ?rate almost ?match-up that of a scooter, chances are you are ?much better off with a ?motorcycle than a bicycle.

Having highlighted a ?couple of ?points to ?think about when buying a bike, the ?decision is now yours. To be ?updated beforehand ?assists you to get ahead.

Dow drops 100 after Fed official's warning

NEW YORK (AP) ? A quiet day on Wall Street turned into the worst sell-off in three months after a Federal Reserve official said he doubted the bank's effort to boost economic growth would work.

Charles Plosser, president of the Fed's Philadelphia branch, told an audience Tuesday that the Fed's effort to support the economy would likely fall short of its goals.

The speech probably startled some investors who had faith in the Fed's latest plan, said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer Harris Private Bank. The plan includes buying $40 billion in mortgage bonds each month until the economy improves.

"So many investors have bought into the illusion," he said. "And it was like Plosser pulled up the curtain on the Wizard of Oz."

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 15.30 points, its fourth straight decline, to close at 1,441.59. The 1.05 percent drop was the worst for the S&P since June 25.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 101.37 points to close at 13,457.55. Caterpillar tugged the Dow down, losing 4 percent. The world's largest maker of bulldozers and other heavy equipment said late Monday that slower economic growth around the world dampened its earnings forecast. Its stock sank $3.86 to $87.01.

Stocks enjoyed one of their biggest rallies of the year Sept. 6 after Mario Draghi, the president of the European Central Bank, laid out a plan to buy unlimited amounts of government bonds to lower borrowing costs for Europe's debt-burdened countries.

A week later, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke announced the central bank's open-ended mortgage bond-buying program and pledged to hold interest rates at super-low levels into 2015.

The S&P soared to a nearly five-year closing high of 1,465 the next day, Sept. 14, but has drifted lower since and fallen back almost to where it was before Bernanke's announcement.

On Tuesday, three economic reports gave the stock market a nudge in morning trading. House prices rose in major cities for a third straight month, and a gauge of consumer confidence came in surprisingly high.

More surprising than those two economic reports was the Richmond Federal Reserve's strong reading on regional manufacturing, a recent trouble spot, said Phil Orlando, chief equity strategist at Federated Investors.

"Look at that. There were three data points on the economy and we crushed them," said Phil Orlando, chief equity strategist at Federated Investors.

But sagging profits could drag on the stock market in the coming weeks, Orlando said. Caterpillar joined a growing collection of companies that have lowered their earnings forecasts. FedEx, a bellwether of world trade, said Sept. 18 that shipping has sunk to recession-like levels. Railroad giant Norfolk Southern has also warned that falling shipments and sinking coal prices will likely drag down its earnings.

Wall Street analysts now estimate that corporate profits will be lower this quarter than a year earlier. That would be the first such drop in three years.

The Nasdaq composite index dropped 43.05 points to 3,117.73. Google's stock touched an all-time high in early trading, clearing $764, but closed the trading day at $749.16.

Apple, the largest public company in the world, lost $17.25, or 2.5 percent, to close at $673.54. It has lost more than $26 in two days. Apple is the biggest component in the S&P but is not included in the Dow, helping explain why the S&P suffered a greater percentage decline than the Dow's 0.8 percent.

The closely watched Standard & Poor's/Case Shiller index of national house prices increased 1.2 percent in July compared with the same month in 2011. Prices rose from the previous month in all 20 major cities tracked by the report for the third month in a row.

The Conference Board said its gauge of consumer confidence shot to a seven-month high of 70.3 in September, up from 61.3 in August and far higher than the 63 analysts were expecting. People surveyed said they were more optimistic about the job market.

The Federal Reserve's manufacturing index, which surveys companies in the central Atlantic region, increased after shrinking for three months as businesses turned more optimistic. Companies said they anticipate more orders and shipments even as employment dips. The index turned positive in September after a negative reading in August.

Treasury prices rose as traders shifted money into safe assets. The 10-year Treasury yield, the benchmark for mortgages and other loans, dipped to 1.67 percent from 1.71 percent late Monday.

Union-buster Walker calls for return of union refs

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? If there's one thing that can unite political foes in Wisconsin, it just may be the Green Bay Packers.

Republican Gov. Scott Walker, who made a national name for himself by going after public employee unions last year, posted a message on Twitter calling for the return of the NFL's locked-out unionized officials after a disputed call led to a Seattle Seahawks 14-12 victory over the Packers on Monday night.

"After catching a few hours of sleep, the (hash)Packers game is still just as painful. (hash)Returntherealrefs," Walker tweeted early Tuesday.

Democratic state Sen. Jon Erpenbach, who was one of 14 Democrats who fled to Illinois for three weeks last year in opposition to Walker's union proposal, said he saw the irony in Walker's post but in Wisconsin "we're all fans, first and foremost."

"If you were born and raised in Wisconsin, you were raised on the Packers," Erpenbach said. "Every Sunday it's Packers and pancakes, not necessarily in that order."

The NFL locked out the officials in June after their contract expired. The league has been using replacement officials, and through three weeks of the regular season there has been much criticism over the way some games are being handled.

Walker's spokesman Cullen Werwie tried to spin the governor's post on Tuesday, saying it wasn't meant as a pro-union political statement. Walker's tweet was being widely mocked on Twitter in light of his push last year that effectively ended collective bargaining for teachers, nurses and most other public workers.

"I don't think this anything to do with unions, but has everything to do with refs making bad calls," Werwie said.

Erpenbach was so incensed over the game that around midnight Monday night he tweeted two different public phone numbers for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and urged people to call and voice their displeasure.

"I could never ref an NFL football game, ever," Erpenbach said. "The replacement refs are doing the best they can do out there, but the commissioner doesn't want this to sink to a World Wrestling Federation-type event on Sunday. They have to do something. It calls into question the integrity of the game."

While Erpenbach himself plans to leave a message for Goodell urging an end to the referee labor dispute, he won't be advising the Packers to employ the same tactics he and the other Democratic senators did last year.

"I would not recommend the Packers get on a bus and leave the state," he said.

Robbers try to blow up ATM, but blow up bank instead

    By Carlo Angerer, NBC News

MAINZ, Germany -- Robbers attempted to blow up an ATM to get the cash inside early Monday -- but ended up destroying the whole bank.

They apparently used more explosives than necessary, reducing the building in the small German town of Coesfeld?to rubble and waking some local residents.

German police told NBC News Tuesday that they suspect the incident was part of a nationwide series of robberies in which the thieves put an explosive gas mixture into ATMs and ignite it.

According to a police report, the robbers were able to get a low four-figure sum of cash out of the destroyed ATM.?The robbers remained on the run Tuesday.

The building in which the bank branch is located also holds four apartments, which are now uninhabitable. No one was hurt.

Other recent robberies in Germany have seen cars being driven into jeweler's shop windows and bank break-ins where thieves tied ropes around ATMs to pull them out of the building with a vehicle.

Researchers develop editing toolkit for customizing zebrafish genomes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2012) ? Mayo Clinic researchers and an international team of scientists have developed a highly-efficient means of editing zebrafish genomes for research purposes, eliminating a bottleneck that has stymied biomedical scientists from using the fish as a model for human disease.

The details appear online today in the journal Nature.

For many researchers, zebrafish are becoming the model of choice for genetic studies. However, the inability to efficiently target genetic modifications has delayed their use by some. The Mayo team used an improved variant of artificial transcription activator-like effector nucleases, or TALENs, to provide a new approach.

"By using genetic engineering tools called TALENs and synthetic DNA to make defined changes in the genomes of our fish, we are able to make small changes (just a few nucleotides) as well as add a specific sequence for biological gene switch applications," says Stephen Ekker, Ph.D., senior author and head of Mayo's zebrafish core facility. "This is the first time we've been able to make custom changes to the zebrafish genome."

Dr. Ekker says this toolkit opens the door to a range of new experiments in zebrafish, including modeling of human disease by introducing small point mutations, designing regulated gene alleles, and developing classical structure/function experiments using an animal model system.

This new approach has implications for other model systems, including mice, rats, flies and worms, and possible applications in stem cell research.

"To our knowledge, this TALEN toolkit also is the most active described to date," says Dr. Ekker. "This has important implications for the growing TALEN field, whether used in fish or any other cells. We used this higher activity for genome editing applications. We also used it to conduct a series of somatic gene function assessments, opening the door to an array of non-germline experiments in zebrafish."

Alexa Thompson discusses the ways that learning English in an online or offline setting can benefit non-native speakers

The Internet platform has become an essential tool for learning and teaching online, as noted by English Virtual Community. In this post, Alexa Thompson discusses the ways that learning English in an online or offline setting can benefit non-native speakers. For instance, learning English can lead to outsourced jobs that big businesses make available overseas. To read more about online English school from Alexa, visit the website she maintains about English education.

English as a second language teachers, English Language Learners

Did you know you can get a foreign job based on your ability to speak English? Many work opportunities are available to English speakers from almost any country in the world. Thanks to the Internet and impact outsourcing, more foreign speakers of English are coming into contact with businesses from North America and Europe, making English as a Second Language courses extremely valuable for both students and native English speakers.

The last three decades have brought an unprecedented amount of international trade. Currently, international deals comprise 60% of the world?s GDP, according to the New York Times? blogger, David Bornstein. That figure is more than double what it was just 30 years ago. Within this massive amount of global trade, a new category is emerging: business outsourcing, with an emphasis in impact outsourcing.

Impact outsourcing typically brings together English-speaking professionals from emerging nations, like India, China, and the Phillipines, and businesses in the North America and the UK. People in these countries have been able to connect online with corporations looking for a myriad of tasks to be completed at a reduced price that still exceeds the wages typical in their home country. These deals benefit everyone, as employers receive work for cheaper rates, and employees achieve financial stability with relatively higher pay. Impact outsourcing is a win-win, and it already accounts for $4.5 billion in international trade annually.

What makes impact outsourcing a real possibility is the widespread acceptance of English as the international language of business. In fact, native English speakers account for a relatively small percentage of total English-speaking populations. According a Boston Globe article, in 2007, there were 400 million native English speakers in the world, 300 to 500 million fluent ESL speakers, and 750 million speakers who knew English as a foreign language. Those numbers have presumably increased in the last 5 years and will continue to increase.

The other principal factor that makes impact outsourcing possible is the Internet. Because information can be transferred with ease and at almost no cost, employers can communicate freely with workers from across the globe. A number of websites have used this to their advantage, by creating procurement portals that bring together employers who need tasks to be accomplished and contract employees who are looking for work. oDesk and Elance are a couple of examples of these websites, some of which create opportunities to outsource writing, organization, computer programming, design, engineering, and many other tasks. Often, jobs are given on a temporary-to-hire basis, meaning that successful contractors often receive future work and long-term, dependable business relationships. Business on these websites, as in most international venues, operates primarily in English.

A number of businesses have set up shop to support this type of business. Businesses such as Digital Divide Data and Samasource work in countries such as Cambodia, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Kenya and South Africa to build skills required for impact outsourcing, including English-speaking and computing, the two main components of outsourcing contracts.

Impact outsourcing will only continue to grow in popularity in emerging and developed nations. As it reaches more people and businesses, families in the developing world will transform and gain real financial stability as they contribute to the profits of established businesses.

Italian Company Strikes Oil in West Africa

Italy?s getting in on the oil exploration booms going on around the world. Eni SpA (NYSE: E), the nation?s largest oil company, has just made the first discovery of crude in Ghana?s Offshore Cape Three Points block, thereby raising the prospect of expanded production in that country.

Oil was found at a depth of around 12,000 feet roughly 31 miles off the coast of Ghana, and the well, named Sankofa East-1X, is producing around 5,000 barrels per day.

    From Bloomberg:

?Eni plans for the immediate drilling of other wells to delineate the size of the discovery and confirm the feasibility of commercial development,? said the Rome-based company, which has operated in Ghana since 2009.

Eni shareholders have an agreement with Ghana?s ministry of energy, and the company is presently trying to commercialize the block?s production on the country?s gas market.

Back near the end of 2010, Ghana's Jubilee field began to produce oil; as a result, the national economy grew by 14.4 percent over 2011?the fastest in Africa according to the IMF.

This year, the Finance Ministry forecasts growth of 9.4 percent, but this new find could easily change matters.

In the first half of this year, Ghana?s oil-based revenue grew by 43 percent to hit $326.6 million. Output averaged 62,985 barrels per day, and it is expected to increase to over 90,000 barrels by the end of 2012.

The OCTP block is operated jointly by Eni (47 percent stake), Vitol Upstream Ghana Ltd. (38 percent), and the state organ GNPC (15 percent).

US State Dept. blasts CNN report on Stevens' diary

Libyan President Mohammed el-Megarif speaks during a memorial service in Tripoli, Libya, Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, for U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and three consulate staff killed in Benghazi on Sept. 11. The deputy U.S. secretary of state has met senior Libyan officials in Tripoli and attended a memorial service for the American ambassador and three consulate staffers killed in an attack last week. (AP) ? A U.S. State Department spokesman says CNN reported on the personal journal of slain American ambassador Christopher Stevens over objections from his family.

The news channel posted in a story online Saturday that it found a journal belonging to Stevens four days after he died in a Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

State Department spokesman Philippe Reines says CNN broke a pledge to the late ambassador's family that it wouldn't report on the diary. Reines is a senior adviser to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

He called CNN's actions "indefensible." CNN did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The channel said in the story online that it took "newsworthy tips" from Stevens' diary and confirmed them with other sources.
