Back pain is very common, and there are many people that are simply living with it. Whether from a serious injury, a temporary sprain or just from the daily tugs and pulls on the body, back pain can be hard to treat. Here are some tips for dealing with it.

Sitting with knees level or higher than your hips can throw your back out of alignment and cause back pain, so sit with your knees lower than your hips. If you have an old saggy sofa, think about trading it in for something with more support. Proper posture can stop back pain in its tracks.

Use ice to help alleviate back pain, as it can reduce swelling and inflammation from injuries that cause back pain. Apply the ice to the affected area two or three times per day for 10 to 20 minutes, and this may help you feel better. An ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables can be used for this purpose.

Being overweight is one of the biggest causes of back pain in the world, so always attempt to maintain a healthy weight if you?re fighting back pain. You will find as an overweight individual that as you begin to lose the weight, your back pain will lessen. The goal should be to keep fighting to lose the weight.

Whatever the reason for your back pain, the one thing you do NOT want to do is surgery. You may have no other choice at some point in time, but try every other option first. Chiropractic adjustments, steroidal injections, OTC or prescription pain medications can all be methods to try first to relieve your pain.

Avoid motions that twist your spine. The more often you twist, the higher your chance of injury. You should especially avoid twisting while lifting heavy objects. Change your position or the way you?re doing the activity if you notice straining in your muscles while twisting. Paying attention to the warning signs early can save you pain later.

Use safe lifting practices. If you lift by bending your knees, you transfer the stress of the lift from your spine to the muscles of your legs. This can reduce the incidence of spasms and reduce the pain that goes along with repetitive lifting motions. If you feel a strain in your back while lifting, you are probably doing it wrong.

Don?t force yourself to work through back pain. Your body needs time and rest to heal, and your pain will not go away until it gets some rest. Continuing to struggle so that you can complete your daily tasks can make an already bad situation worse. You also risk undoing any progress that you have already made.
