Texans get much needed relief with $167 million in Health Insurance

Texas received the most in rebates compared to any other U.S. state

San Francisco, CA, August 16, 2012 ? San Francisco, CA ? Receiving an average of $187 in the mailbox ? with some families getting up to as much as $795 ? was a blessing as the residents of Texas had always considered health insurance in their southern state as overpriced.

It?s due to specific provisions in the Affordable Care Act, introduced by President Obama?s administration, which required insurance companies to payback clients who paid less than 80-percent of their total medical coverage. The money came from the portions of the premiums charged by the companies.

Amongst other U.S. states, Texans received the highest rebate amounts. In areas like North Dakota recipients got as low as $5, while the highest was reported by the Department of Health and Human Services to be $622 in Alaska.

There were many phases that the health reform law had to go through before becoming effective. After passage by Congress in 2010, it went to the U.S. Supreme Court where it was challenged as a waste of public funds with too much liability on insurance companies. However, the challenge was lost and the Act became official.

?It?s holding insurance companies accountable,? said executive director of the advocacy group Health Care for America, Ethan Rome, according to Chron.com. ?It?s insisting they spend more on health care than on executives? compensation.?

Rome went on to talk about how companies had been given a free hand from previous administrations by not being regulated in a strict manner. With Obamacare, President Obama termed the past dealings as ?those days are over?.

Most analysts had predicted that after the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, insurance companies would lower their premiums in order to avoid hefty rebates to clients, but this has not been the case.

Currently, Blue Cross Blue Shield is the biggest health insurance company working in Texas with 4.8 million clients, and they had to give rebates to just 8-percent of that total amount.
