Surf Life: Q&A with Liza Caban | Halogen TV

Surfer Girl: Q&A with Liza Caban

Liza Caban is a surfer in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Featured in episode 2 of ?Surf Life,? she was named the 2010 ?Athlete of the Year in Surfing? by Sports and Recreation Organization in Puerto Rico.

How did you start surfing?

My dad taught me when I was 11 years old.

What local spots do you surf the most?

Rompe olas, Wilderness, Surfers, Jobos

What philosophy do you approach the surf life with?

Just have fun :)

Who is your surf hero?

My dad

Are you a goofy or regular?

Goofy

Tell us about your sponsors.

My current sponsors are Billabong, The Room Surf Shop, X-Trak, El Carey, Malta India, Impact surfboards, Nixon and Von Zipper

Tell us about the biggest wave you?ve caught.

I don?t really know the biggest wave I?ve gotten but I?ve gotten some 15-footers at this beach called Wilderness, I love surfing big waves :)

Tell us about your ?quiver.?

Right now i have a 5?2 fish for little waves, 2 5?9s for medium sized waves and a 6?2 for bigger waves

Where?s your favorite surf spot in the world?

Rompe Olas in my hometown

What role do contests play in your sport ? and how have you fared in them?

Contests are really important in surfing. Doing good is what gets you noticed, which is what gets you sponsors. I?ve done pretty good in contests; I?m currently ranked first in Puerto Rico.

Tell us about your family.

I love my family. Without them I would not have gotten as far as I have in surfing. My dad plays a huge part in my surfing career, he?s the best coach I could?ve ever asked for!

Tell us about the surf competition you started.

I started a competition with Billabong two years ago. There had never been a surf contest for girls only. So Julie Gonzalez, the rep for billabong in Puerto Rico, and I put together a contest for girls of all ages and ability. It?s awesome because more than 70 surfer girls show up!

What?s it like being female in a male-dominated sport?

It has its ups and downs. It?s awesome cause since I?m a girl I can drop in on guys no problem! haha But sometimes when we?re competing we get the worst conditions and the worst tides. You get used to it though. haha

How would you encourage other women who want to get into surfing?

I would tell them that it?s the best thing ever!! and that it?s not just a sport, it?s a lifestyle. The feeling you get when you?re surfing is unlike any other.
